Lombardi joined Helicos in June 2006 as senior vice president of sales and marketing and was later promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer. In October 2007 he was named president and chief operating officer.
He will retain the position of president in his new role as CEO.
Prior to joining Helicos, Lombardi was vice president of Applied Biosystems' DNA-sequencing and genetic-analysis business unit, and a senior vice president at Affymetrix.

Olex will focus on the first application for the company’s microdroplet experimental platform: a sequence-enrichment application for targeted genomic sequencing that will be launched later this year.
