New York Genome Center Wins $125M From Simons Foundation International, Carson Family Trust

NEW YORK – The New York Genome Center has secured $125 million in philanthropic funding to maintain its core functions through 2029, GenomeWeb has learned.

NYGC said on Thursday that the Simons Foundation International and the Carson Family Charitable Trust have "made new commitments" to support the vision of the center's incoming scientific director and CEO, Bing Ren, who will be succeeding current CEO and scientific director Tom Maniatis next month.

"Together, they are underwriting the core functions of the NYGC through 2029," the center said in a statement. According to an NYGC spokesperson, the total gift is $125 million, but she did not break down how much each organization is contributing.

The two philanthropies already provided the NYGC with $125 million once before, in 2019. At that time, $100 million came from the Simons Foundation and $25 million from the Carson Family Trust.

Founded in 2011, the NYGC set out "to establish a central hub of genomic infrastructure, technology development, and expertise with direct participation of the leading academic and medical institutions in New York," according to its website, and "to develop and apply genomic technologies to the advancement of basic and medical science, and the goals of genomic or precision medicine."

From the start, NYGC received support from the Simons Foundation and the Carson Family Trust, as well as from other New York philanthropists and the state of New York.
