DNAStar and Scarab Genomics have jointly launched a DNA and RNA sequencing services business. The companies, both based in Madison, Wis., will be offering library preparation, coordination of the most appropriate sequencing technology and platform, assembly, analysis, annotation, and visualization of results. DNAStar will contribute its informatics capabilities, and Scarab its laboratory expertise.
Illumina is now shipping the HiScanSQ platform, which integrates microarray analysis and next-generation sequencing. The system, which Illumina announced earlier this year (IS 3/23/2010), consists of the HiScan Reader, a high-performance array scanner that can also image sequencing flow cells, and the SQ Module, an add-on fluidics device that enables genomic-scale sequencing.
SoftGenetics has added a variant comparison tool to its NextGene software. The new tool can be used to compare the results of up to 10 resequencing or target capture analyses. It accepts data from several sequencing platforms, including 454, Illumina, and SOLiD. Combined with the software’s scoring system and filtering options, the new tool promises to reduce the complexity of SNP and indel discovery from next-generation sequence data, according to the company, helping researchers to focus on significant variants quickly.
Fluidigm has released a protocol for the Access Array system that allows users to sequence amplicon libraries using the 454 system and Titanium series reagents. The array automatically generates emPCR-ready libraries, producing 48 barcoded samples per chip for approximately $7 per sample. When used with a 454 sequencer and Titanium reagents, it can capture up to 24 kilobases of sequence per sample, or 1.15 megabaes per chip.
The Genome Bioinformatics Group at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has released genome browsers for the European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, and for the giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca. The rabbit assembly was produced by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the panda assembly by BGI in Shenzhen, China.
