SoftGenetics has added a paired-read mapper to its NextGene next-generation sequence analysis software. According to the company, the new alignment algorithm significantly reduces false positive rates of mapping short-read paired-end and mate-pair sequences from the Applied Biosystems SOLiD, Illumina Genome Analyzer, and Roche/454 GS FLX, by pairing the reads prior to mapping them.

Epicentre has launched QuickExtract, a new bacterial DNA extraction kit for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The kit, which includes Ready-Lyse lysozyme, can be used to isolate DNA for PCR, restriction digests, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and optical mapping.
