British researchers are being taken off European research grant applications because of Brexit, the Guardian reports.
David Lomas, who was representing UK university hospitals, told members of Parliament that European consortiums vying for funds though the European Research Council have removed their British counterparts. Since the UK voted to leave the European Union, researchers have been worried that Britain would lose funding, collaborations, and status.
"One big issue for most of hospital academics is applying for grant applications, and we've seen people bumped off grant applications to the EU," Lomas told the health committee, according to the Guardian
He added that the UK is also losing talent people because of the vote. Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, noted that the process to apply for permanent residency cards included an 85-page application.
"If we don't get the very best people we don't drive the research and innovation where we punch above our weight. If we can't attract the very best, we can't lead in the innovations that will lead to patient benefits," Lomas said.
