The Russian government is preventing Russian scientists from attending international scientific conferences, according to the Verge.
It adds that Russia's Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced the decision on its Telegram channel and that the ministry also called on scientific schools to no longer highlight when research is published by international journals indexed by Web of Science and Scopus. This, the Verge says, is a reversal of a decade-long effort aimed at bolstering the international competitiveness of Russian research institutions — which was gauged using Web of Science and Scopus metrics.
The Verge notes that these moves comes as there is increased friction between Russian scientists and the international research community due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
It further adds that some Ukrainian researchers have called for journals to no longer publish work from Russian researchers, and that while some journals have said they would not accept work from Russian research institutions, others like Nature have argued against halting scholarly exchange.
Some Ukrainian researchers have also called for Russian scientists to no longer be invited to international conferences, the Verge adds.
