Expressions of concern have been appended to two papers from Cleveland Clinic researchers, Retraction Watch reports.
Images in the papers, it adds, have come under scrutiny. The papers, which came out in the Journal of Biological Chemistry from Subha Sen's lab at Cleveland Clinic in 2004 reported on the overexpression of myotrophin in hypertrophy and heart failure and on cellular death and regeneration during end-stage heart failure. But as Retraction Watch notes, PubPeer users uncovered discrepancies within work from Sen's lab. For instance, users there highlighted what appeared to be duplications in images.
The expressions of concern added to the 2004 JBC papers say "credible concerns have been raised regarding some of the data and conclusions" of those articles. Another paper from the Sen lab from 2009 that described eight microRNAs whose expression changes during heart failure has been withdrawn, Retraction Watch adds.
