MilliporeSigma, Opentrons Labworks Partner for Automated Assay Solutions

NEW YORK – MilliporeSigma, the US and Canada life science business of Merck KGaA, said Thursday that it has inked a partnership with Opentrons Labworks to automate the company's biology assays using the latter's custom robotic workstation.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Through the multiyear agreement, scientists and engineers from both companies will collaborate to develop and validate automated workflows using MilliporeSigma's assays and a custom Opentrons Flex workstation.

According to MilliporeSigma, the partnership will cover broad workflows, including protein sample preparation, molecular, cell, and other biochemical and chemistry assays. Customers can place orders for workstations and assay kits starting mid-2025.

By combining the automation expertise and service capabilities of Opentrons with MilliporeSigma's broad range of products, the Burlington, Massachusetts-based company hopes to help streamline research for customers from sample prep to analysis for immunodetection, protein research, enzyme technology, genome editing, omics research, pharmaceutical development, service and testing, and cell culture.

"Our partnership with Opentrons reinforces our focus to automate and digitalize the lab — supporting scientists at all stages with tools that can increase efficiency, safety, and success rates of delivering new potential therapeutics," Jean-Charles Wirth, head of science and lab solutions for the life science business of Merck KGaA, said in a statement.
