Biotium Acquires Nucleic Acid Extraction Technology From Cell Data Sciences

NEW YORK – Life science reagents company Biotium announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the CAT5 FFPE RNA and DNA extraction technology from Cell Data Sciences.

After the acquisition, Fremont, California-based Biotium, which previously distributed the Cell Data Sciences' RNAstorm and DNAstorm kits based on the technology, will become the sole manufacturer of the kits. Financial terms of the deal are undisclosed.

According to Biotium, all RNAstorm and DNAstorm kits will continue to use the Cell Data Sciences catalog numbers. The company will also continue to offer the RNAstorm RNA extraction kit for fresh cells and tissues. For customers aiming to extract DNA and RNA from the same FFPE sample, Biotium said it will offer a combination of both the DNAstorm and RNAstorm FFPE extraction kits at a discounted price compared to purchasing each kit separately.

A Stanford University spinout, Cell Data Sciences developed RNAstorm and DNAstorm FFPE extraction kits based on a novel CAT5 catalytic technology for enzymatic reversal of formaldehyde crosslinking in FFPE tissue samples, according to Biotium.
