Job Description

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Abhijit Patel at the Yale Cancer Center and the Yale School of Medicine (www.patel-lab.org).  Our laboratory is investigating a new class of tumor-derived DNA and RNA biomarkers that are found in the blood of patients with various types of cancer.  We are developing and validating innovative methods to permit ultrasensitive, high-throuput detection of such tumor-derived nucleic acids in the circulation using next-generation sequencing platforms (refs: Nature Methods 2015, doi:10.1038/nmeth.3311; Cancer Research 2012, doi: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-11-4037).  This field has seen a recent explosion of interest as clinical applications for these new biomarkers are becoming apparent.  We are creating tools to investigate whether circulating tumor DNA and RNA can be used for monitoring treatment response, for tracking disease recurrence, and ultimately for detecting cancer at an earlier, more curable stage.  We are also applying the ultrasensitive mutation detection technologies that we have developed to better understand the orgins and heterogeneity of genomic alterations within tumors.  

We seek a highly motivated individual with an inclination for technology development and an interest in translational cancer research.  Candidates must hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree, and have a strong background in nucleic acid biochemistry.  Resourcefulness, creative thinking, and excellent written and oral communication skills are very important.    Applicants with a background in chemistry or engineering might also find our research interesting, and may have the right aptitude for the position.  Meticulous experimental technique is also especially important in our lab.  If you would like to join our efforts to create new diagnostic tools with the ultimate goal of improving cancer outcomes, please send your CV and a brief cover letter to Dr. Patel via email.  To avoid spam, I request that you visit our lab's website at http://patel-lab.org to find the contact information.
