Job Description

We are seeking to recruit a talented Web Designer to join the Web Development team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).

The EBI is a dynamic, supportive and internationally diverse environment where you’ll work alongside developers, UX designers and scientists throughout the design process, and use your proven design skills to deliver high-value products that will be used by scientists around the world.

You will be responsible for helping to develop project briefs and produce initial concepts, and then develop those into wireframes, clickable prototypes and production quality websites, working closely with your team-mates and other colleagues in the Institute.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about design, with excellent digital design skills, demonstrated in your portfolio. You will have expertise in HTML and CSS and a proven ability to design and develop interactive, responsive web content across multiple devices. You will strive to produce polished, accessible and cross browser/platform compatible code. Good knowledge of modern JavaScript would be a big advantage, as would experience of lean and agile approaches to design and development.

As well as technical and design ability, it is essential that you can effectively communicate ideas and concepts to different groups - from senior scientists to fellow developers and designers. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work well with colleagues and to collaborate with external partners.

The EBI, a world leader in bioinformatics, is located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge, in the UK. It is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and provides cutting-edge research, service and training for the bioscience community. We have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Our staff are encouraged to attend conferences and training courses, as well as to speak and write about their work. You can also expect a range of benefits, a Mac or PC, excellent sports facilities, an active social club, free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, and an attractive international working environment set in 55 areas of parkland.
