Cancer surveillance statistics provide a window into the population experience of cancer and provide an opportunity to study how changes in behaviors, prevention, and treatment technologies are impacting disease. We are a leading cancer modeling group, using statistical and math modeling techniques to interrogate trends in prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men. Our innovative models are also being deployed to advance national policies for prostate cancer screening, counter disparities in disease management and outcomes and inform clinical decision making.

As a Staff Scientist, you will partner with our statistical team and our clinical and data collaborators across the country to address questions at the cutting edge of prostate cancer research. You will summarize screening and treatment practices and link them with disease incidence and mortality outcomes. You will develop computer programs to simulate virtual cohorts of cases and subject them to novel diagnostic and treatment interventions in virtual trials.
You will develop interfaces to facilitate user access to the models and author/co-author presentations and articles for national publications and conferences. This work presents an exciting learning opportunity with the potential to greatly increase your computer, statistical and scientific literacy. As part of this position you will interact with investigators from other modeling groups in the US and Europe and investigators from the national urologic oncology community and the National Cancer Institute.
A Staff Scientist in the Public Health Sciences Division is a bonafide PhD Research position that is associated with a specific investigator or set of projects. Staff Scientists are encouraged to work independently within the mandate of the research portfolio associated with the position. Staff scientist, while not expected to generate funding will have many opportunities to contribute to research funding proposals.
- Lead collaborations with investigators to conduct analyses of patterns of care and cancer trends
- Design and implement models simulating population interventions for disease control
- Project economic and clinical outcomes for cancer prevention and screening programs
- Implement novel analysis methods and statistical algorithms
Summarize methods and results in written and graphical form
A PhD degree in a related quantitative field (e.g., statistics, mathematics, health economics, applied mathematics) with enthusiasm for using these skills for public health research is required, as are excellent computing skills and experience programming in R/S+ or other statistical software. Knowledge of C/C++, Fortran, Python, or another object-oriented language is highly desirable. Excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential to success in this position.
