Job Description

Job Title:  Sr Reagent Development Automation Engineer

Reports To:  Sr. Managing Automation Scientist

Department:  Hardware Development

Job Summary

This position is for a highly motivated automation scientist or engineer with significant hands-on experience programming and running laboratory automation equipment, particularly high-performance liquid handlers and/or integrated robotic systems as part of a reagent development and/or manufacturing operation.  The position will require development and manufacturing transfer for a complex variety of molecular biology and sequencing reagents in support of a large-scale DNA sequencing platform. 

The candidate should have a fundamental understanding of biochemistry and molecular biology and be familiar with developing and manufacturing a variety of reagents.  The candidate should be familiar with product and process development and should be capable of designing and executing verification and validation studies.  Some data analysis may be required.  The candidate should be able to communicate at a very high level and carry out complex experimental procedures independently with minimal supervision.  The candidate should be comfortable in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.                                                                                                            

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and testing of reagent manufacturing methods.
  • Run instrument qualification procedures, including IQ/OQ.
  • Run optimization studies.
  • Run system validation studies.
  • Generate, analyze, summarize and present test data.
  • Write test reports.
  • Generate SOPs.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in  biochemistry or  engineering (Chemical Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related science with an Engineering focus) with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a relevant reagent development and/or manufacturing role with increasing responsibility or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience programming and operating liquid handling systems and process automation systems in either R&D or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and aseptic techniques.
  • Must have proven ability to apply experimental design, data analysis and statistics to decision making.
  • Familiarity with systems and processes used in biochemical production environments, including development and use of SOPs and LIMS.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and planning skills, with great attention to detail and record-keeping in both laboratory notebooks and electronic documentation systems, including batch records.
  • Ability to develop and carry out standard operating procedures involving basic and advanced laboratory techniques, calculations, materials measurement, and operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Good trouble-shooting, problem-solving and analytical thinking skills required.
  • Demonstrated strength in working within a team and with cross-functional partners, as well as ability to work effectively independently. Should be well-organized, self-motivated and possess excellent time-management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to rapidly changing requirements, priorities and tight schedules.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with various analytical chemistry methods as applied towards reagent manufacturing
  • Experience scripting on Hamilton platforms highly desirable
  • Familiarity working within an ISO13485 environment
