Job Description

We are looking to recruit an experienced and motivated software developer to join the growing Variation and European Genome-phenome archive team at the EBI (EMBL-EBI) which is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The team is responsible for large scale data submission and archiving, analyses and QC, as well as data presentation through web and secure download services. The scope of this growing dataset includes next-generation sequencing based genomic and phenotype data for more than half a million samples totalling multiple petabytes. The successful candidate will take part in developing and deploying new standards driven data models for submitted data, automation and refactoring of our data validation and archive processes, data integration into other services at the EBI and data exchange with our international collaborators. (S)he will also be expected to attend and present the service at internal meetings and scientific conferences. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysing and representation. EMBL-EBI provides a dynamic, international working environment and has close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's, Master's degree or Ph.D in mathematics, computational science, information technology, bioinformatics or be able to demonstrate the equivalent professional experience. Experienced IT professionals with a willingness to learn the relevant genomic domain area will be preferred. In addition, (s)he should have a minimum of two years experience working as a software engineering professional or academic experience including major team production projects with demonstrated strong technical skills. Strong demonstrated technical experience over multi-year team projects and a willingness to learn others code and participate in refactoring, design, and testing is more important than specific bioinformatics domain experience. It is essential for the candidate to have strong Java SE skills in a multi threaded environment , experience with relational databases and experience in a unix environment including managing cluster jobs. Highly desirable skills include: prior experience with job scheduling and workflow managing systems as well as big data technologies such as NoSQL databases and Hadoop and code management justin Git/cvs. Familiarity with REST API and Javascript web application development, cloud computing, encryption and high-speed data transfer as well as Perl and Python would be a considered an advantage. The ideal candidate will be expected to work independently showing strong self motivation skills, and as part of a closely interacting team of international scientists. This position also requires working within production deadlines. Excellent English language, communication and interpersonal skills are a prerequisite
