The Solid Tumor Translational Research (STTR) at Fred Hutch is developing a suite of fully integrated statistical and visualization tools that facilitate analysis and hypothesis exploration of linked molecular and clinical information. The software will be available through an easy point-and-click browser interface for users to compare patient populations, perform statistical analysis, and produce high quality visualizations based on multi-dimensional molecular and clinical profiles.
This web application enables researchers and research-oriented clinicians to explore complex multi-dimensional data, to elucidate mechanisms of tumorigenesis, and thus to refine cancer treatment strategies. Since a typical user is not likely to have computational expertise, a simple and intuitive yet powerful interface is essential. Providing a positive user experience and straightforward navigation scheme is integral to the success of this project.
We have both clinical and laboratory collaborators, and are entering a phase of growth for which we seek to hire an additional, broadly experienced software engineer. This project offers a rare opportunity to engage in creative software engineering AND to directly contribute to the improved treatment of life-threatening tumors through collaborations with molecular biologists, physicians, other software engineers, and laboratory staff within the project and in the larger community.
The staff software engineer will be responsible for the rapidly evolving server side elements of the biotool, including web servers, security, cluster and cloud computing, and SQL and nosql databases. Though the broad outlines of the software architecture are established, considerable innovation and creativity is needed to ensure scalability, both with respect to large molecular data sets and a growing number of data analytical services. The incumbent will work independently, spending the majority of work time performing higher level programming responsibilities such as analysis, design, implementation, and quality control of complex programs and data base applications. This includes:
- Test & debug new and modified software
- Develop software features and reports
- Create and maintain documentation
- Collaborate with other members of IT staff and end users
- Follow software development best practices
- Participate in code and design reviews
- Analyze user requirements
- Estimate software development tasks and participating in creating development and implementation schedules for features and applications
- Maintain knowledge and follow department specific project management methodologies
- Proven track record of delivering on multiple complex projects through all stages of the development lifecycle; design through deployment
- Design and deliver formal and informal presentations on a variety of technical topics
- Contribute, follow and maintain knowledge of current software development trends, best practices, industry tools and standards
- BS in Computer Science, Engineering or related field required
- Minimum of 5 years professional software development experience
- Proven history of building server-side systems, including web server administration, security and linux system administration
- Experience with open source software development (github, svn, code coverage analysis), cloud & cluster computing, and unit testing in multiple programming languages
- Knowledge of scientific computing and statistics, R package construction, html, css, user interface design, and web app testing preferred
- Solid understanding of Object Oriented Programming concepts, data structures and algorithms
- Sharp analytical abilities, proven design skills and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated leadership abilities in an engineering environment in driving operational excellence and best practices
- Ability to work independently, multi task & prioritize workload
- Enjoys working in a team environment and has a proven record of positive contributions to the work of the team
