Job Description

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) seeks applications from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join its staff in a cutting-edge Sequence Data Biocurator position.

The post holder will be part of the team that delivers the European Nucleotide Archive, EMBL-EBI's globally comprehensive data resource covering sequence reads, assemblies, alignments and functional annotation that boasts more than three decades of expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

 Role responsibilities include:

  • the biocuration of validation rules relating to functional annotation.
  • maintenance of checklists for standards-compliant sample data reporting
  • the delivery of expert helpdesk and training to our broad user base.

This work will contribute both to the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) content and to our portfolio of data management and coordination projects that support the team's external collaborations in such areas as pathogen surveillance and marine genomics.  The position will also offer opportunities to present at national and international scientific meetings and workshops.


Applicants should possess a university degree in the life sciences and either a post-graduate degree or a PhD in bioinformatics or a biological science.

 Candidate requirements include:

  • Broad knowledge of molecular biology
  • Proficiency in working with desktop computers and familiarity with command line operations
  • Deep and up-to-date knowledge of biological databases, sequence analysis and software, including assembly methods
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills
  • Good presentation skills
  • Full commitment to teamwork and ability to work independently as well as part of the team
  • Previous professional experience in the bioinformatics domain and familiarity with relational database management systems and SQL query language are also highly desirable.
