Job Description

Lead scientist in new Neuroscience lab focused on developing assays for high content screening and in support of target validation for the Neuroscience portfolio. In addition will have responsibilities for designing strategies towards target ID, target engagement, and mechanism of action studies. An ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in developing assays for both screening and deconvolution. 
Key Accountabilities: 

The Senior Scientist Biology -- NS will be accountable for all aspects of the Neuroscience Complex Assay laboratory. 

• To develop assays using complex neuronal systems (iPS derived cells, primary neurons) this will be used in high content phenotypic screens. 
•Develop approaches to deconvolute hits from the high content screens. This will involve use of chemical biology and cell biology based approaches. 
•Conduct experiments to increase confidence in rationale for Neuroscience projects more generally. 
•Conduct the above aims by working with colleagues in the Neuroscience iMED including the Tufts lab and Discovery Sciences, This will involve developing strong partnerships across these groups 
•There will be an expectation of project leadership and management of colleagues (1-2 FTEs) and in addition postdoc and graduate scientists. 
•Ensure compliance with corporate policies including GLS and SHE. 
Additional Accountabilities 

• Contribute to shape and advancement of the scientific direction of projects and the functional disciplines to maximize project support. 
•Contribute to publication strategy as needed, driving timely preparation and delivery of patents/research publications in collaboration with IP group. 
•May be a member of cross-functional or global projects or work stream. 
•To evaluate and manage relations with external collaborations when and as needed. 
•Leading local discovery working groups, participate actively in global groups or global activities. 
Functional Knowledge 

Will require at minimum: PhD in biochemistry or cell biology with postdoctoral experience in similar areas, or similar disciplines. Will have the ability to operate effectively in multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in their discipline. This role demands significant experience of interacting with people and groups both internal and external.


Required Skills and Experience: 

• Be highly competent in basic molecular biology, biochemical and cell biological techniques to design and conduct experiments to support specific projects in the AZ neuroscience portfolio. 
•Be familiar with principles and technologies for high content screening, and their application to small molecule target identification/deconvolution, engagement and validation. 
•Be competent in the handling of complex cell types to conduct the above experiments. 
•Hands-on expertise in technologies such as bottom-up mass spectrometry-based applications for in cell and in-vitro quantitative proteomics is a bonus. 
•Have high interest to learn and practice the principles of drug discovery to support the Neuroscience portfolio. 
•Be active in the Neuroscience field in the Boston area and build on publication record in the field (communications to symposiums, peer reviewed journal articles and/or patent applications). 
Areas of Expertise/Specialization: 

• Experience and track record in biochemistry, chemical biology and/or cell biology. 
•Awareness of recent development in literature in the field of Neuroscience drug discovery and target validation
