Job Description

The Senior Network Engineer is a core contributor to the IT Infrastructure Services team responsible for design, implementation and delivery of Genomic Health’s global network reference architecture. The candidate must demonstrate experience with a broad range of networking technologies, network security, firewalls, VPN and Intrusion detection, VoIP and Voice traffic technologies, LAN, WAN, MAN and cloud connectivity. The candidate must possess a systematic and analytical approach to their work, a strategic understanding of the role of Information Technology in the organization, and will work with the Infrastructure Services Operations team to address problems by developing comprehensive and sustainable solutions.

Take an ownership role of the development of network solutions and reference technologies by gathering requirements, designing, implementing, documenting and transferring knowledge to the operations team for managing systems though their lifecycle. Provide and maintain documentation of the network architecture and design, infrastructure components, and operating procedures.


  • Develop conceptual, logical and physical design of network solutions including those related to LAN, Voice Traffic (QoS, Voice gateways configuration, MS Lync VoIP, MPLS, etc), firewall and security, Global WAN/MAN, global distributed network (PBR, Dynamic Routing, DMVPN, etc.), VPN, Network Load balancing etc….
  • Develop detailed implementation, test plans and quality metrics focusing on High Availability, Performance Resiliency, Scalability and Supportability. Lead the implementation and test execution in collaboration with the operations team to ensure smooth transition to the operations team. Provide all the necessary documentation for ongoing support and evidence of solution quality
  • Collaborate with other tech domain SMEs for total end to end infrastructure solutions delivery.
  • Maintain Network solutions roadmap and present on regular basis strategic vision for proposed future network technologies and improvements aligned to corporate strategy. Proactively advise the management on ongoing needs and issues related to network and security infrastructure. Communicate industry trends, best practices and opportunity for technology and process optimization.
  • Assist and participate in management, monitoring, and troubleshooting the network infrastructure as an escalation resource for the operations team.
  • Participate in design review discussions with other members of the IT Infrastructure Services team.
  • Act as a mentor and resource to junior engineers, operations, and support staff


  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 12+ years of network engineering experience
  • Expert knowledge of Cisco router and switches and related technologies; spanning tree, BGP, OSPF, etc.
  • Experience and knowledge of wireless technologies and support of a corporate wireless network.
  • Expertise deploying to remote sites.
  • Experience and knowledge with firewall technologies, either Cisco ASA and/or Palo Alto Networks (PAN) Firewalls.
  • Have the technical skills to manage configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of large scale, distributed Web Application Firewall products, Security Information Event Management, Firewalls, Intrusion Detection, Anti-Malware, File Integrity, DDoS mitigation appliances, and IP Reputation Management technologies in a dynamic cloud based environment
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify web attack vectors, e.g., SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, session-hijacking
  • Knowledge of and ability to administer network and host-based security tools to include penetration testing and ethical hacking products
  • Current knowledge and proficiency with requirements gathering, design, implementation, configuration, optimization and analysis of campus and multi-site networks (LAN, WAN and IP Voice) hardware and traffic configuration of Cisco, Dell, Force 10 and Arista switches and routers, A10 Load Balancers, WAN Optimization, High speed / low latency networks doe HPC, firewalls, IPS and other networking technologies.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with design, implementation, configuration, support, and troubleshooting the following technologies in a Cisco based network:
  • TCP/IP, IPv4/6, LACP, SMTP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP. EGRIP, BGP, HSRP, OSPF, SSH, MPLS, QoS, ACLs, RADIUS, wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n, VLAN, NAC, 802.1x and port security, Policy and Dynamic based routing, VPN and DMVPN, WAN Optimization (Silverpeak), Network monitoring (Solar Winds, AppNeta), iSCSI for SAN
  • Experience with Infiniband and fiber switching highly desirable.
  • Expert level experience and expertise with design and implementation VoIP based telephony systems and unified communication services in a global multi-site scale including Microsoft Lync and Cisco Voice Gateway configuration and management. Recent hands-on experience with implementation and management of Telco services such as PRI and SIP. Expertise with Voice Gateways device configuration for telephony voice traffic.
  • Good understanding of network requirements and technologies to enable the use Private, Public and Hybrid Cloud services. Knowledge of cloud security and encryption is a plus.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Windows servers and Windows Client operating systems, Virtual compute infrastructure (Hyper-V and VMWare). Knowledge of Linux/UNIX is a plus.
  • Configuration of systems reporting to Security monitoring systems which provide logging, monitoring, and actionable alerting. Systems include IDS/IPS; Database Activity Monitoring; and Vulnerability Scanners.
