Pacific Biosciences is seeking a disciplined mechanical engineer with experience designing complex, high-volume cross-functional instrumentation. The DNA sequencing market that Pacific Biosciences is competing in requires continual development of novel concepts that can be proven and transitioned to a manufacturing environment. The candidate will be responsible for creating and developing these new concepts for our existing and upcoming products. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in instrument environmental control definition, design, testing, and troubleshooting. A strong work ethic and commitment to solid documentation practices are a must. Work is fast paced and multifaceted, touching on many additional engineering disciplines: thermal, chemical/biological, optical, electrical, structural, and software. The perfect candidate will be flexible to shifting priorities and working hands-on to diagnose and solve technical issues. They must be comfortable working closely with others and giving/receiving constructive design feedback.
The candidate will be responsible for working on cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define specifications, diagnose issues, develop and test concepts, then execute on designs with input from many functional groups. The primary focus of the role is on instrument environmental control design, although there will be many opportunities to work on many other areas of the system as well. The candidate will also design and run engineering experiments to set appropriate specifications. This role will provide support to manufacturing, field service, and internal users and to improve reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability of our current and future products.
