Job Description

Do you want to use your software engineering talents to solve computational problems of real scientific and medical importance? Do want to help develop a cutting edge technology that reveals the mysteries of life itself? Pacific Biosciences is seeking a talented software engineer to build tools to analyze SMRT (Single Molecule, Real Time) sequencing data to address diverse sequencing applications areas. The candidate will develop robust, reliable and fast algorithms in the areas of de novo assembly, resequencing and transcript analysis.

Responsibilities include:

• Thriving within a challenging, fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment.
• Developing new algorithms to solve complex scientific data processing problems.
• Producing production grade software solutions adhering to company standards and practices.
• Accelerating computational performance by parallelization or exploiting hardware.
• Writing functional specifications and design documentation.
• Communicating professionally with a diverse group of clients and staff.
• Providing assistance to testers and support personnel as needed to determine system problems.
• Defining research and development tasks and making accurate time estimations for complex software projects.
• Performing job functions with minimal or no supervision.

Requirements

A MS/Ph.D. in Computer Science or Physical Sciences, preferably related to computational biology. Four or more years
experience in bioinformatics, computational biology or comparable schoolwork. Proficiency in a scripting language for data analysis (such as Python, R or Perl) and an object-oriented language (such as C#, Java, or C++) is required. Previous experience with next-generation sequence analysis, especially in the areas of de novo assembly, resequencing and transcript analysis, is desired. Preference given to candidates with experience implementing algorithms on specialized hardware such as GPUs or Intel Xeon Phi. Experience with Linux required. Good understanding of software best practices, object-oriented design, and/or software architecture is required. Experience with professional development tools including IDEs, software control systems, and central bug reporting systems is required. Experience developing production grade software based on detailed specifications and utilizing unit test and functional test methodologies. Candidate should have demonstrated experience in working within a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, technically challenging environment.

About Our Organization

Pacific Biosciences’ mission is to transform the way humankind acquires, processes and interprets data from living systems through the design, development and commercialization of innovative tools for biological research. The company has developed a novel approach to studying the synthesis and regulation of DNA, RNA and protein. Combining recent advances in nanofabrication, biochemistry, molecular biology, surface chemistry and optics, Pacific Biosciences has created a powerful technology platform called single molecule, real-time, or SMRT™, technology. SMRT technology enables real-time analysis of biomolecules with single molecule resolution, which has the potential to transform the understanding of biological systems by providing a window into these systems that has not previously been open for scientific study.
