Job Description

The Sector Director, Natural Resources (the Director) will work closely with the Chief Science Officer to develop the short- and longer-term strategies for the sectors that are relevant to BC’s bioeconomy, including forestry, agri-food, mining, energy, environment, fisheries and aquaculture. The Director will execute activities comprising the development of external partnerships as well as oversight of an internal portfolio of Natural Resources projects. The Director will supervise a group of managers that are in charge of optimizing the outcomes of Genome BC’s portfolio and developing collaborations and strategic partnerships leading to the adoption of genomics in the sectors. In general, the Director, will represent Genome BC at external meetings covered by the Natural Resources Sector and will work with their team to oversee Genome BC’s existing portfolio and attract potential applicants for Genome BC programs.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversee Genome BC’s research program portfolio in Natural Resources and a team of sector managers
  • Support the development and implementation of a strategy, and influence relevant policy, to encourage the adoption of genomics technologies into practical applications across the Natural Resources Sector
  • Work with external partners (private and public) to attract new teams interested in applying to Genome BC and Genome Canada programs, in particular large scale projects that fit the strategic vision of Genome BC
  • Develop, monitor and improve processes to anticipate and efficiently resolve challenges related to project launch, reporting, and closing
  • Oversee Natural Resources projects to understand the impact of Genome BC’s portfolio in these sectors, including the continued development and implementation of appropriate metrics and maintenance of the projects database
  • Develop task forces and advisory groups to accelerate the adoption of genomics in the Natural Resources Sector, at both the provincial and national level
  • Engage local and national organizations and industry in potential partnering opportunities for the use and application of genomics to improve BC’s bioeconomy
  • Liaise with Genome Canada, other regional Genome Centres and other partners in matters related to the Natural Resources Sector at a national level
  • Where necessary, work with Communications and Education and Entrepreneurship and Commercialization teams to support Genome BC’s strategic goals
Requirements
  • Graduate degree (MSc or PhD) or professional degree. An MBA is desirable, but not essential
  • At least eight years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability in understanding the applications of innovative technologies and in developing and implementing strategies that will help advance the adoption of these technologies
  • Demonstrated ability in managing a group of highly qualified managers and in overseeing a portfolio of large scale and complex projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a constantly changing environment and efficiently manage several ongoing projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and in preparing strategic documents and/or business plans
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial as well as written and oral communication skills
