Job Description

Pacific Biosciences is looking for a highly motivated and detail oriented Scientist to help develop commercial reagent products for the SMRT™ Sequencing System. 

The Ideal Candidate:
• Has experience in developing processes and test methodologies associated with molecular biology based products, preferably ones involving polymerases, DNA library construction, and/or DNA sequencing
• Has a broad chemistry knowledge of enzymes and molecular biology techniques
• Has experience in formulations development and scale up transfer into manufacturing
• Has experience in operating next generation sequencing technologies and interests in learning/supporting new cutting edge technologies/equipment
• Has appreciation for process quality and specifications as a requirement for manufacturing
• Has experience in production support
• Has strong collaborative and team work attributes
• Must be able to design effective experiments followed by detailed data analysis
• Must be hands-on, willing to get into the lab to execute to plan
• Has good documentation skills (writing SOPs and Batch Records)
• Has good inter- and intradepartmental communication skills
• Has good ability to handle multiple and rapidly shifting priorities

• Develop well characterized, robust and reliable processes for manufacturing
• Develop and validate new QC/analytical assays for quality control
• Transfer new products, formulations, and production processes to manufacturing personnel
• Transfer new QC processes to QC personnel
• Set up manufacturing infrastructure including BOMS, part numbers, batch records
• Establish relationship between product performance, physical specifications and manufacturing capabilities
• Lead and execute experiments for new product development in molecular biology and sequencing technologies
• Extensive lab work designing and executing experiments, and analyzing data
• Complete initial production builds of products
• Complete stability studies 
• Source and qualify external vendors


• M.S., or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related scientific discipline
• 0-5 years (Ph.D), 5-10 years (M.S.), or 10+ years of relevant industry experience in Life Sciences, Medical Devices, or Diagnostics 
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Detail oriented scientist with ability to take initiative in a fast pace environment 
• Experience in an ISO regulated environment a plus
