Job Description
  • Operation

    • Proactively monitors and replenishes existing biomaterial inventories

    • Coordinates biomaterial group activities with Manufacturing Support and BioProduction to support the objectives of the ATCC, if applicable

    • Characterizes, authenticates and preserves newly accessioned biomaterial items

    • Maintains and supports ATCC’s world-class reputation

    • Develops processes and procedures to ensure efficient, cost-effective processing of a high-quality biomaterial and reagents

    • With supervisor, monitors and adheres to the Collection budget

  • Research & Development

    • Develops new and/or improved authentication and validation methods

    • Develops new biomaterial groups and systems, as applicable, consistent with the objectives of the ATCC

    • Responsible for providing leadership and managing a specified biomaterial group and/or R&D team. Management of the collection includes characterization, authentication, preservation,

    •  Position Description maintenance and distribution of cell lines, microorganisms, or reagents procured by the incumbent or other individuals within the ATCC.

    • Designs, builds and directs internal and external research activities and collaborations, as applicable

    • Interacts with other corporate programs to foster a productive research environment

  • Supervisory Responsibilities, if applicable

    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws

    • Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluation, counseling, promotion and termination

    • Participates in or conducts regular staff meetings to communicate pertinent corporate and program information

    • Fosters a positive work environment

    • Leads by example

    • Ensures staff complies with all safety requirements

  • Scientific, Customer and other external interaction

    • Provides scientific expertise to internal and external customers as applicable

    • Manages interactions with depositors and advisors as needed/assigned

    • Manages research collaborations with internal and external groups

    • Participates in professional activities both internal and external to ATCC

    • Maintains memberships in appropriate scientific societies

    • Submits data for publication and/or patent protection when applicable

    • Keeps abreast of current, relevant literature and technologies 

  • Leadership

    • May serve as a Principal Investigator on a grant/contract application or administration

    • Demonstrates strategic view of assignments relating to growth of area/collection, use of resources and appropriate staffing.

    • Demonstrates knowledge in resource planning and project management.

    • Provides input into the development of the annual budget.

    • Provides ideas in scientific area that meets or enhances ATCC mission and/or goals.

    • May be responsible for a highly specialized scientific function or several related scientific projects.

  • Performs other ancillary duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

 

  • Doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics or related biological science required.
  • Must have up to 5-8 years of experience in the area of microbial genomics and/or microbiome research.
  • Demonstrable experience in analysis of various microbial communities using metagenomics tools such as 16S sequencing and in bioinformatics tools for analysis of metagenomics and next generation sequencing data.
  • Proven track record of independent research in the field of microbial genomics with relevant publications or presentation is required.
  • Experience working with cross-functional product development teams is desirable as is experience in external collaborations.
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.  Reputation as emerging leader in relevant scientific field with sustained performance and accomplishments. 
  • Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be a proponent of continuous improvement.
  • Experience working with cross-functional product development teams is desirable as is experience in external collaborations.

About Our Organization

Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge.

The Scientist will be responsible for leading research and product development in the area of microbial genomics at ATCC. The successful candidate will have a strong background in bacterial genomics and will be using current microbiome knowledge to develop ideas and concepts for creating new tools and standards for the research community. The responsibilities include developing a plan of action and then independently designing and executing experiments related to microbiome research and metagenomics analysis of various microbial populations from different sources. The ideal candidate will have a deep expertise in molecular biology and next generation sequencing with a proven track record of product development in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment. The incumbent will be integral part of the cross-functional product development teams and will interact with key individuals in marketing, operations, quality and external collaborators to develop product specifications and then execute the projects.  The individual will be responsible for providing progress of the projects to the executive leadership team and will be monitoring funding and other resources to ensure they are being used appropriately and efficiently.  Scientist may be responsible for other R&D activities including development of new and/or improved characterization and validation methods for microbiology/molecular biology products and other projects consistent with the goals and objectives of ATCC. It is expected the incumbent supervises and mentors the staff, while leading by example, and enforces all ATCC corporate policies and procedures.
