Position Summary

Precision NanoSystems has an opening for an Scientist II, Cell & Molecular Biology to establish new primary and stem cell cultures and molecular biology assays. The Scientist II, Cell & Molecular Biology will be a member of the Application Products Group, which develops transfection kits for use with the NanoAssemblr™ instrument platform. The position reports to our Head of Application Development and is based at PNI’s headquarters in Vancouver, BC. The individual will work collaboratively with the engineering and product development teams, as well as external collaborators, to develop new transfection kits for the delivery of nucleic acids to primary cells and stem cells.  This work will expand PNI’s current transfection franchise, the leading solution for delivery of RNA & DNA in primary neurons in vitro & in vivo (

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to establish a new R&D function with the aim of developing novel technologies to support exploiting primary cells and stem cells for a greater insight into disease biology. The successful candidate will technically excellent, with attention to detail and a prior track record of successfully executing R&D programs.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Establish expanded cell culture capabilities to facilitate development of transfection kits for the delivery of nucleic acids, including pDNA, mRNA and siRNA
  • Train staff in cell culture and relevant assays
  • Identify and lead collaborations with external partners to test and validate new product concepts
  • Work with internal teams to ensure the smooth transition of R&D concepts to market ready products including providing support to Product Development, Manufacturing, Operations, Marketing, Sales, Business Development and Finance teams
  • Maintain current and extensive understanding of experimental and clinical developments in the relevant areas of cell and molecular biology and how be able to apply this knowledge to product development, market and competitive analyses and business plans
  • Provide training and technical assistance to sales team as needed
  • Generate intellectual property documents, draft complete patent applications, evaluate prior art, and respond to patent office actions, as required
  • Collaborate with relevant teams to ensure safety/health and regulatory compliance of the wetware R&D facility
  • Manage project research budget, initiate cost reduction projects
  • Support for all technical documentation related to product development and launch
  • Act as scientific ambassador for the company, make external presentations, publish abstracts and articles, establish collaborations
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned
  • PhD in relevant scientific discipline, with approximately 3-5 years of experience in R&D related to cell biology
  • Experience establishing and maintaining primary and/or stem cell cultures and assays
  • Experience deriving induced pluripotent stem cell cultures is an asset
  • Proven experience working in multi-disciplinary laboratory teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Successful track record publishing in a relevant field. Grant writing experience is an asset
  • Skilled presenter who is able to deliver technical data summaries as well as high level explanations designed to support strategic decisions to a senior audience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as exemplified by prior experience working in cross-functional teams, including external collaborators
  • Proven ability to be flexible and adjust to rapidly changing priorities, and to deliver results to meet project timelines on budget
