Job Description

The Sales Development Manager, Human ID is responsible for meeting the needs of the expanding DNA Forensics Segment of our Applied Testing market. The position will enhance customer satisfaction and build customer relationships while selling proprietary/advanced technology products and services in the defined area. Additionally, the Human ID SDM offers proven knowledge in the specialized Human Identification market segment area with strong knowledge of STR Workflows and related statistical and technical analysis including extraction and assay technologies including automated extraction, liquid handling and detection technology systems. The Human ID SDM is considered within QIAGEN's organization as a key knowledge holder, contributes to the product development process and assists in the integration of new/acquired technology. He or she should be comfortable leading and working in teams, experienced at project management and successful selling at all customer levels. The Human ID SDM position works directly with dedicated HID account management team as a field based HID specialist reporting into the Sales Director for Applied Testing North America, within the Market Development branch of the Commercial Operations organization. Position available is for an applicant in the West Coast Area (CA north to WA).

* Meet/Exceed/Monitor sales targets through self- directed, strategic solutions based approach to territory management. Experience in complex sales.
* Create and develop strategy for the Human ID market. Work is accomplished in a proactive manner without considerable direction.
* Knowledge development through key opinion leader management, integrations into strategy plans.
*Able to create and develop resolution independently to complex problems while meeting objectives.
* Routinely contributes to and leads teams, with experience in project management.
* Willingness and ability to take on additional challenging tasks/project responsibilities assigned by manager, business team, or others.
*Individual with an advanced degree in the Life Science area, MS or higher preferred, MS in Forensics ideal.
*Proven and demonstrated knowledge Human Identity/Forensics with 5-7 years’ experience.
*Knowledge, experiences and relationships within some of the following networks is preferred (e.g.):
* AAFS and Regional AFSs
* NIST and FBI

Should also have a broad understanding of and ability to sell across QIAGEN’s automation portfolio and value chain including experience with extraction, liquid handling assay setup and qPCR. Should also have and will maintain knowledge of competitive technology and platforms including qPCR engines (ABI 7500/7900HT), CE sequencing (ABI 3130, 3500) and PCR amplification (9700).

Demonstrate ability to identify and explore new market opportunities for QIAGEN with information gathered via market assessment. Should be able to manage 10-15 key opinion leaders, approx. 5 KOLs per focus market segment.

Able to interact with/educate customers at both higher (V.P./C.O.O.) and lower (lab tech) skill levels. Should be comfortable giving a technical seminar, oral presentation or poster at conferences.

Past lab experience required. Should be able to guide customers in full HID workflow, troubleshoot extraction and assay issues.

Should understand the workings and demands of regulated or environmentally controlled laboratory (ASCLD certified, ISO 17025, etc).

Willingness to travel up to 66%.

US citizenship preferred but not required for entry into US Dept. of Defense and Homeland Security sites.


Sales Revenue / Budgets: Meet or exceed sales targets for assigned products/services and assigned business objectives. Support other specialists and representatives and develop tactical plans to maximize revenues. Ability to sell to committees, Chief Technology and Chief Executives levels; sell against competitors in assigned marketplace. Differentiate features and benefits of competitor’s products.

Strategy: Implementation of corporate strategy in defined key accounts. Negotiate contract and execute pricing strategy to maintain existing business and develop new business. Drive adoption of new technologies through key opinion leaders, seminars, national conferences, references and other as applicable

Customer Focus: Through consultative selling, enhance customer satisfaction and increase our competitive advantage while building trust and relationships with customers. Maintain and develop strong relationships with key customers and references. Provide market feedback and market analysis for new concepts and products.

Planning / Forecasting: Develop and integrate an effective portfolio business plan with appropriate team members in the assigned territory. Forecast within accuracy guidelines. Perform pre-call planning and/or coordinating with TSR for increased sales effectiveness.

Business / Markets: Drive and initiate development of new business opportunities and references. Conduct seminars/exhibitions and increase number of strategic partnerships within market. Communicate market information through business teams, CRM market feedback, and/or other approved channels.

Manage Resources: Involve and support team members to achieve mutual company goals and objectives. Daily use of CRM database for input and output of customer information to increase sales effectiveness. Meet expense budget guidelines. Utilize communication channels to ensure effective communication across business units.

Decision Making: Makes sounds business decisions based on relevant information, takes calculated risks as necessary to achieve business objectives.
