Job Description

Pacific Biosciences is seeking a Scientist/Research Assistant to join a dynamic team developing next generation DNA sequencing technology.  This position is in a fast-paced, start-up environment, interacting with R&D and Process Development scientists from a variety of backgrounds.  The selected individual will be working in a support role toward the development of new reagents for the Pacific Biosciences SMRT™ sequencing system.  This will include reagent preparation, testing new reagents and protocols to develop and optimize conditions, and performance testing on commercial as well as prototype instruments.  The position primarily involves hands-on laboratory work and data analysis.

The selected individual will provide reagent preparation support and instrument operational support.  They will modify protocols and recipes and prepare reagents to address experimental design requirements.  Some data analysis, mainly in a QC function will also be required.  Shift work will b


•    B.S. or equivalent experience in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related scientific field
•    Laboratory experience in reagent prep and assay development required
•    Must have excellent problem solving skills
•    Ability to work shifts
•    Some understanding of biological processes is essential
•    Experience working with complex, prototype instrumentation a plus
•    Ability to analyze data in R or a similar statistical package is desirable
•    Attention to detail, careful record-keeping, a high level of organization, and good verbal and written communication skills are required
•    Excellence in good laboratory practices is required including methods for safe pipetting
•    Working knowledge of fluorescence and its application would be helpful
•    The successful candidate will enjoy working closely with others as a member of an interdisciplinary team
