Job Description

Illumina currently has an opportunity for a Research Associate to join the Population Sequencing team based at Illumina’s R&D facility in Little Chesterford, Essex (nr Cambridge).  The team of 15 supports Illumina’s ongoing R&D process, as well as exciting new population-scale collaboration projects, by performing NGS sequencing as a core-support facility.  This is a fast paced environment which would require some weekend work on occasion to support Illumina’s ever-growing business.  If you have good lab-skills and would like the opportunity to work on cutting-edge DNA sequencing technology, then this role is worth considering.
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Preparation of Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) libraries
  • Develop and optimize NGS library preparation methodologies
  • Perform real time PCRs for library quantification
  • Operation and troubleshooting of NGS instruments
  • Experiment planning, execution, troubleshooting, data analysis and interpretation
  • Prepare reports, present results and communicate effectively with colleagues

·         Ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential

  • Maintain strong working relationships within a multi-disciplinary environment
  • An ability to be flexible in a fast paced and dynamic environment


  • Degree in the biological sciences is required


  • Demonstration of proven laboratory experience in the area of life sciences
  • Demonstration of an ability to troubleshoot molecular techniques
  • Solid understanding of nucleic acid biochemistry and applying techniques of molecular biology
  • Working knowledge or background in NGS would be advantageous
  • Detail-oriented, organized, with an ability to implement complex protocols
  • Demonstrate an ability to document procedures and results in a detailed lab notebook A demonstrated ability to work well with others
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in standard computer skills, PowerPoint and Excel

This role would suit a candidate who has a background working in research laboratories (industrial or academic), with good molecular biology techniques and is now ideally looking for an opportunity to work with a market leader in NGS technology.
