Job Description

Join a multidisciplinary project team aiming to discover small molecules targeting host mechanisms that prevent infection by a range of clinically relevant pathogens. These small molecules will be used to test potential treatment strategies in preclinical models and serve as starting points for further development towards human investigation.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team that drives innovation to solve challenges in therapeutic discovery. As a member of the team, extensively interacts with scientists studying autophagy, ATG proteins, and infectious disease, as well as screening scientists and synthetic chemists to enable compound discovery and iterative rounds of compound testing/optimization. The primary role involves in vitro pharmacology: cell-based assay development using a variety of standard and novel techniques.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
• In close collaboration with project team members, designs, implements and validates biological experiments and assays. For example, performs detailed characterization and molecular mechanism studies of chemically optimized compounds using standard and novel assay technologies.
• Generates and develops concepts as a member of the team; contributes to intellectual development activities. Provides innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance project or group objectives.
• Makes contributions to determining feasibility of research goals and objectives.
• Understands and contributes to broad strategic objectives.
• Participates in communication of results through scientific conferences and publications.
• Works with HTS, automation, informatics and chemistry staff at all levels to develop, implement and monitor all processes.
• Works with informatics group to define requirements to capture biochemical protocols and analysis of data in ELN environment.
• Exhibiting independent scientific troubleshooting, time management and laboratory operation abilities
• Other related tasks as necessitated by the position.

• BS degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field with at least 2 years of experience in a research laboratory, or an MS degree in related field
• Experience in infectious disease and/or autophagy research highly desired
• In-depth understanding of cellular and molecular biology, and the ability to perform basic quantitative analysis of large data sets using Excel and related programs for data analysis.
• Must be familiar with the operation of standard lab equipment, the use of robotic liquid handling systems and plate readers, and the handling of small molecules
• Experience in a high-throughput research environment, knowledge of assay development, and experience with various types of cellular and biochemical assays preferred
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with internal and external investigators in a fast paced environment required
• Must be able to use sound judgment to handle a variety of tasks and to shift priorities simultaneously, as well as to effectively solve problems
• Knowledge of related computer systems
• Extremely strong organizational and time-management skills
• Strong analytical skills and a high degree of initiative
• A proven record of successful interaction with project team members, external customers or vendors

The successful candidate will be a results-focused, team-oriented, creative bench scientist able to excel in a fast-paced environment. She or he must be self-motivated, detail-oriented and exhibit strong problem solving skills. In addition, the successful candidate should be a clear and effective communicator, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills to enable collaboration with project teams, peers, and management in identifying and achieving research goals.
