Job Description

The R&D Engineering Technician Specialist will serve as a member of an elite team that is developing Cepheid’s next generation medical diagnostic instrument platforms, lab automation and production systems.


  • Supports engineering activities such as design, test, fabrication and assembly of prototype electrical systems, printed circuit boards, and test equipment.
  • Works from schematics, verbal descriptions, or datasheets to perform testing, checkout and trouble-shooting functions.
  • Builds electrical subassemblies and wiring harnesses using hand crimping tools.
  • Performs operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment.
  • Sets up and executes pre-defined verification/validation test plans, records results in a formal report.
  • Conducts verification and validation of the risk control measures applied in the instrument platforms and lab automation systems in accordance with ISO 14971.
  • Assists engineers in performing EMC, Safety, HALT and design life testing.
  • Assist engineers in root cause analysis and reporting in a product development, production and post-production context.
  • Collaborate with the engineers in the design, verification and validation of the design modification that addresses the root cause.
  • AA degree in electronics or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a “hands on” electronic engineering technician role.
  • Must be able to describe previous activities in detail.
  • Solid understanding of AC and DC electrical wiring (i.e., current/voltage ratings, circuit breakers, and safety precautions).
  • Must be proficient in the use of DVM’s, and PC based test software.
  • Must be able to demonstrate solid understanding of the tools, materials, and methods required to properly build cable harnesses.
  • PCBA soldering skills.
  • Excellent workmanship standards are essential.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills required.
