Job Description

The Product Reliability Engineer will focus on systemic failure investigations and support new product/process introduction that will require in-depth technical knowledge of all aspects of Cepheid products.  This position will be relied on their expertise on various complex data analysis of field complaints, manufacturing trends, and automation data output to initiate and lead systemic failure investigations.  They will work cross-functionally with design teams to support troubleshooting efforts and provide feedback for long-term design robustness.  Failure investigation techniques may require physical inspection, metrology, design of experiments, test engineering and test automation including scripting, root cause analysis techniques, and documentation of results.  As an outcome of the investigation, they will evaluate and recommend long-term systemic corrective actions for continuous process improvement.


  • Initiate and lead systemic failure investigations
  • Establish infrastructure of managing/analyzing data from all different areas of the organization
  • In-depth data analysis to identify systemic issues and working with cross-functional teams
  • Support failure analysis of new product/process introduction and work with cross functional design teams
  • Design and execute experiments as part of investigations
  • Prototype and evaluate potential mitigations and corrective actions
  • Continuously document progress during investigations and prepare final reports
  • Support in brainstorming various ongoing failure investigations within the team
  • Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Process Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level
  • Minimum of 5-8 years relevant professional experience
  • Expertise in data analysis of large dataset, physical inspection, metrology, design of experiments, test engineering and test automation including scripting, root cause analysis techniques and documentation
  • Expertise in all aspects of the fully integrated Cepheid product (reagents, consumables, instrument)
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally to drive continuous improvement
  • Ability to successfully lead multiple investigations simultaneously within short deadlines
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Excellent writing and documentation skills
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data management for large volume complex data sets
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment and/or within manufacturing operations under cGMP, ISO and FDA regulations.
