Job Description

Basic Function and Scope of the Position:


Illumina are one of the few companies that perform all of it’s core technology development and innovation in-house.  The Little Chesterford site is the R&D HR for EMEA and is made up of over 500 engineers, scientists and informaticians.  Some of Illumina’s most valuable intellectual property has been created at this site and there is a rich history of successful product release to market (MiSeq, NextSeq platforms as well as several platform upgrades).  The Technology Development team are seeking an innovative and hands-on Design Engineer who would like the opportunity to develop the world’s leading Next Gen DNA sequencing platform. 


The post holder would be expected to plan, design, develop and test components and subcomponents of Illumina’s technology which include microfluidics, optical detection, liquid handling, refrigeration and touch screen displays. If you are a pragmatic engineer who enjoys meeting problems head-on in a fast paced environment, the this role delivers.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with designing, developing, & testing, mechanical sub-systems and prototypes.
  • Maintain appropriate design and verification documentation.
  • Support both early stage technology development, and development projects.
  • Support project teams across the site and the company as a whole.


This role would suit a qualified Engineer that has demonstrable experience in the areas of medical device, diagnostic, laboratory automation or similar industries and would like to work with a global leader that is pushing the boundaries of DNA sequencing.  Illumina offers the opportunity to work on industry leading platforms in one of the fastest growth areas of technology – Next Generation Sequencing.


The successful candidate will ideally have the following attributes:


  • A degree/masters in Mechanical Engineering
  • Proven design experience in an industrial setting, preferably life sciences/medical devices or similar
  • Proficient in using 3D CAD (ideally SolidWorks)
  • Experience working in prototype design, fluidic systems, liquid handling robotics, microfluidics an advantage
  • The candidate must be proactive, self-starting, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment.
