Initial appointments will be made for up to seven years with tenure option, and the successful candidate will be offered a competitive salary and research budget. The institute will provide support and mentoring to apply for additional external research funding at the Austrian and European level. Two of the four Principal Investigators at LBI-RUD hold prestigious grants by the European Research Council. LBI-RUD researchers are well-connected in global networks and will support young investigators in their effort to build up own new research collaborations in the field of rare and undiagnosed diseases.

We are looking for an outstanding biomedical scientist who would be eager to start or consolidate their research group at an exciting new institute pursuing basic and translational research on rare diseases. Relevant disease areas include, but are not limited to, rare genetic diseases of hematopoiesis, the immune system and the nervous system. Systems biological approaches are equally appreciated as are focused mechanistic studies and translational research with direct clinical applications, or any combination of the above.

Relevance
More than 7,000 rare diseases exist and affect around 5% of the population, constituting a major unmet medical need. Rare and undiagnosed diseases also offer unique opportunities to identify key genes and mechanisms underlying human physiology and diseases. Many rare diseases are caused by single-gene defects, thus enabling a clear mechanistic understanding of genotype-phenotype links relevant in humans and to develop concepts for personalized therapy. Rare and undiagnosed diseases are paradigmatic for the era of precision medicine, and LBI-RUD will broadly embrace their pioneering role for the future of medicine.

About Our Organization

The Institute
LBI-RUD has established a coordinated research program on the genetic and epigenetic origin and the functional basis of rare diseases, with a special focus on inborn errors of the immune system and the nervous system. Previous scientific publications by the LBI-RUD key researchers have enabled the identification of novel genetic defects underlying primary immunodeficiency disorders (e.g. Boztug K et al Nature Genet 2014, Dobbs K et al New Engl J Med 2015, Salzer E et al Nat Immunol 2016), and monogenic neuronal diseases (Nagy V et al Cell Cycle 2015). The institute has first-hand access to the latest assays for high-throughput sequencing and single-cell profiling (Schmidl et al Nature Methods 2015, Bock et al Nat Biotechnol 2016). It also investigates the ethical and societal dimensions of rare diseases research. The institute is directed by Kaan Boztug, a leading immunologist and rare diseases researcher. It is situated in a beautiful and well-designed building with state-of-the-art laboratories and technology platforms, located next to one of the world’s largest university hospitals in the heart of Vienna. The institute holds close ties with its renowned partners, namely the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Medical University of Vienna, and the Children’s Cancer Research Institute of the St. Anna Children’s Hospital.
