Job Description

The Earlham Institute (EI) has an exciting new role for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join Professor Anthony Hall’s group to research and develop new, experimental approaches for uncovering the structure and genetic diversity of complex crop genomes.  

This role will include the opportunity to;

•Develop and optimise new lab protocols for genome-wide analysis of DNA and histone methylation in complex genomes, scale up and automate protocols to allow the population-scale studies of epigenetics,
•Visit, isolate and ship DNA and RNA samples from field trials in India and Mexico. Help support and coordinate local staff,
•Learn, develop and optimise experimental methods for scaffolding short reads using 10X Genomics and HiC for de novo genome assembly, 
•Develop and test new exome capture pipelines, working and coordinating with manufacturers.

To be considered for this post, candidates should hold a PhD in molecular biology, or MSc/BSc with significant experience working in a high-throughput genomics centre with a focus on next-generation sequencing protocols, and possess the following skills and experience (E=essential, D=desirable):

•PhD in molecular biology, genetics or plant molecular biology (D).
•Development and optimisation of protocols and workflows; Knowledge of working and scripting on robotic platforms; knowledge of the latest technical developments in genome sequencing (D)
•Experience researching, developing and optimising complex molecular biology protocols; experience working closely with manufacturers with a publication record to support this (E).
•Experience in collaborating with international research groups (D).      
•Good presentation and interpersonal skills (E).
•Able to deal effectively with international and national collaborations (D).
•Experience delivering workshops (D).

Earlham Institute is a UK hub for innovative Bioinformatics through research, analysis and interpretation of multiple, complex data sets. It hosts one of the largest computing hardware facilities dedicated to life science research in Europe. This has been boosted recently by an e-Infrastructure grant to expand the data storage capacity to a multi-petabyte unit, deploying a high performance cluster and large-memory server enabling the allocation of processes requiring several terabytes of computing memory.

Earlham Institute’s state of the art DNA sequencing facility operates multiple complementary technologies for data generation that provide the foundation for analyses furthering our fundamental understanding of genomes and how they function. We aim to be at the forefront of technological advances and are developing and implementing technologies to generate and analyse new types of data. We also develop novel platforms to provide access to computational tools and processing capacity for multiple academic and industrial users and promoting applications of computational bioscience. Earlham Institute has one fully owned subsidiary, Genome Enterprise Ltd (GEL) via which it offers genomic and bioinformatics services on a trading basis and works with commercial providers on a partnership basis. Earlham Institute also receives specific funding to enable knowledge exchange programmes which are supported across the institute teams.
