Job Description

Van Andel Research Institute’s Laboratory of Epigenetic Pathways in Disease, under the direction of Dr. Gerd Pfeifer, has a position available for one Postdoctoral Fellow.

The Pfeifer lab studies hypermethylation in cancer genes with the intent of elucidating the mechanisms and significance of CpG island methylation.

Specifically, we are interested in candidates with a background in molecular biology.

This postdoctoral position is available immediately for a motivated PhD graduate who meets the qualifications and description outlined below. The fellow is expected to use and establish cellular and animal models to investigate epigenetic modifiers and their impact on DNA methylation patterns.

Job Functions:

The overall goal of the project is to study epigenetic pathways with relevance for cancer and other diseases. The candidate will work with Dr. Pfeifer and his research team to identify areas of interest and expertise that will facilitate the highest level of contribution to reach overall project objectives.

Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) provides postdoctoral training opportunities to scientists beginning their research careers. The fellowships are to help promising scientists advance their knowledge and research experience and at the same time support the research endeavors of VARI under the mentorship of a VARI Faculty member.

While this project is currently funded, an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application. All VARI Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding as soon as it is practical and reasonable after hire. Receiving a fellowship award provides recognition for both the fellow and VARI!

Van Andel Research Institute’s laboratories are housed in a world-class research facility designed by renowned architect Rafael Viñoly. The Institute is dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and working to translate those findings into effective therapies. The Institute is home to more than 200 scientists and support staff that work in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe. The Institute’s world-class, state-of-the-art core facilities offer a comprehensive range of advanced technologies and services to assist faculty and staff in meeting their research goals.

Van Andel Research Institute is continuing its rapid growth and is seeking to build upon recent additions of internationally recognized experts, outstanding experienced scientists, and exceptional new investigators. With the aim of establishing the Institute as a globally recognized research hub for the study of epigenetics in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, we are further expanding the Center for Epigenetics, the Center for Neurodegenerative Science and the Center for Cancer and Cell Biology.
