Job Description

The Protein and Peptide Chemistry Department in Seattle is engaged in early target discovery, validation and development of novel therapies for the treatment of Obesity and Diabetes. The STAR Postdoc will focus on identification and establishment of novel chemistry methodologies for site-specific protein modification. The position is offered as part of the Novo Nordisk R&D STAR Program (Science Talent Attraction and Recruitment). This 2-year program supports the most talented candidates in biotechnology, life, medical and engineering sciences who want to pursue a career in pharmaceutical R&D.

This position will report to the Director of Protein and Peptide Chemistry Seattle, and work under the supervision of the leaders from both peptide chemistry and recombinant protein areas. Internal relationships potentially include the project teams and research colleagues internally and globally. Communicates data and collaborates externally when required.

Essential Functions
Perform a deep survey of the literatures to identify chemistries or other methodologies for site-specific protein modifications. Design, validate and optimize a process of the identified reactions to a point that specific protein modification can be achieved under mild reaction conditions with attractive yields. Conduct and summarize all the work in a publishable manner with the goal of high-impact manuscripts. Effectively communicate with supervisor, colleagues and external research communities to promote a world-class research environment.

Physical Requirements
Approximately 0-5% overnight travel


* A PhD in organic or bio-organic chemistry
* Strong synthetic chemistry background including organic synthesis, peptide synthesis, protein modification and semi-synthesis
* Strong analytical skills for integrating and interpreting interdisciplinary data
* Creativity, and out of the box thinking
* Scholarly excellence in research as documented by strong publications and/or patents
* Effective written and oral communication skills, and strong commitment to research in a team environment focused on cutting-edge discovery
