A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is immediately available in Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Optide program, a peptide drug discovery initiative that seeks to develop novel therapeutics for cancer, pain, neurological disorders and other debilitating diseases. The fellow will join a multi-disciplinary team comprised of pharmacologists, structural biologists, protein biochemists, medicinal chemists, and drug discovery experts, with the common goal of understanding and optimizing peptide drug pharmacology to develop new drugs.
The candidate will lead a project that seeks to understand the potential for knotted peptides to penetrate cells in order to access intracellular drug targets and the mechanism(s) by which cell penetration occurs. The ideal candidate will bring the intellectual aptitude and creativity required to develop innovative experimental methods, in addition to a high level of proficiency in a wide variety of laboratory techniques. These techniques will range from in vitro cell biology assays and immunocytochemistry to in vivo pharmacology and ex vivo tissue analysis. The successful applicant will work effectively both as an independent researcher and within a multidisciplinary team, in addition to providing mentorship to junior lab members. The ultimate goal for the fellow is to develop the skills to become a successful independent researcher while performing cutting-edge research that will lead to the advancement of novel therapeutics into clinical practice.
The ideal candidate for this position is a PhD- or MD-level trainee that can successfully develop and lead a focused effort to understand the potential for knotted peptides to penetrate cells in order to access intracellular drug targets. The position requires excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to develop innovative experimental methods. The successful applicant will work effectively both as an independent researcher and within a multidisciplinary team to perform cutting-edge research that will lead to the advancement of novel therapeutics into clinical practice. The candidate is expected to be skilled in standard biochemical and pharmacological techniques along with a background in in vivo models and have a strong publication record.
To be considered the successful candidate must have:
- A PhD, or MD (or be nearing completion), ideally in the areas of pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field
- At least two first-author publications
- Experience with in vivo pharmacology and cell-based assays amenable to drug discovery
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to develop innovative approaches to experimental design
- Experience in protein biochemistry is highly desired
