The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other devastating diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work, the Fred Hutch collaborates with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children's, to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied sciences. A significant portion of this fellowship is funded by the Kellen Joyce Heart of a Warrior Research Fund. This fund was established by friends and family in the memory of a young man in Seattle who lost his life to brain cancer.
A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position as the Kellen Joyce Fellow is immediately available in the laboratory of James M. Olson (and collaboratively with Patrick Paddison) in the Clinical Research Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC). The fellow will join an ongoing NIH-funded program focused on dissecting the pathophysiology of pediatric brain cancers and developing therapeutic candidates. Working with the senior members of the team, the fellow will design and implement a research program to prioritize candidate therapeutic targets and interrogate therapeutic candidates using patient-derived xenografts and technology that enables multiplexed comparisons in vivo (Klinghoffer, Sci. Transl. Med. 2015 Apr 22;7(284). The ideal candidate will bring passion, a willingness to overcome challenges and intellectual aptitude to dissect potential therapeutic targets and the compensation mechanism lost as normal cells become cancerous.
The successful applicant will be expected to leverage their own expertise and the resources available at the FHCRC to perform cutting edge scientific research. With the end goal of becoming a successful, independent researcher, they will engage with their colleagues to develop and execute on innovative approaches to the discovery of novel therapeutics with potential translation into the clinical setting. This position will require contribution both as an individual and as part of a larger team, as well as mentorship to junior lab members. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to participate in the Optides/Project Violet program.

To be considered, the successful candidate must have:
- A PhD, MD or equivalent (or be nearing completion), ideally in the areas of pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field
- Strong publication record
- Understanding of the pathophysiology of cancer and therapeutic discovery
- Experience with assays amenable to drug discovery or pathway delineation
- Experience with gene editing techniques (shRNA or CRISPR/Cas9) is strongly desired.
