Job Description

The Biostatistics and Biomathematics Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Division of Public Health Sciences is recruiting a statistical research associate (SRA). The SRA will engage in collaborative research with areas focused on disease risk prediction and novel biomarker (e.g., genetic variants and proteomics) evaluations. The SRA will have opportunities in participating large collaborative projects such as early disease detection research network.

- Work with PhD statisticians and other scientists (including clinicians and basic scientists) in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of results
- Develop analytic data sets, develop data quality assurance plans, conduct statistical analyses, and document data sets and analytic programs.
- Monitor on-going studies and write detailed statistical analysis, plan and perform interim and final analysis.
- Provide statistical consultation

Master's degree in statistics or biostatistics and at least 2 years of related experience. Strong programming skills, including using SAS and R package. Proficiency in statistical computing and in the development of statistical programs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Must be self-motivated and able to work well individually and as a team with a diverse group of investigators and researchers across disciplines.

A highly motivated postdoctoral fellow is sought for a position in a research laboratory in the Clinical Research Division of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The focus of research in the lab is the study of the molecular and cell biology of gastrointestinal cancer as well as the role of genetic and epigenetic alterations in cancer.

1) Bench research to study the molecular and cellular biology of cancer. Research techniques using molecular and cell biology techniques (PCR, assays to assess DNA methylation, western blot, DNA, RNA, and protein extraction from animal tissues, immunostaining, flow cytometry, tissue culture, transfection) in cell culture systems and mouse model systems.

2) Computational biology skills for analysis of data from microarrays, methylation arrays, and next-generation sequencing data sets.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will conduct the molecular biology studies and oversee the performance of the molecular studies of the tissues and cell line samples by the research technician working on the projects. He/She will direct the sample processing and routine assessment of the assay results. He/She will perform high-level analysis of data from array and next-generation sequencing data generated in the lab and also from public domains.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field with an interest or experience in early detection and progression of colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers. Strong analytic skills, computational and biostatistics background, ability to work independently, excellent writing skills, and interpersonal skills are required. Experience with common bioinformatic methods, tools, websites (such as NCBI, Ensemble) and data resources is essential. In particular, experience with retrieving, normalizing and analyzing high-throughput datasets using R packages/Bioconductor is highly desired.
