Post-doc position to use cutting-edge mass spec approaches to study protein stability during key transitions of embryogenesis

EMBL scientists are looking for a post-doctoral fellow, in a joint position between the groups of Mikhail Savitski and Eileen Furlong, to use thermal proteome profiling to study protein stability and function during the maternal-to-zygotic (MZT) transition. The MZT is a crucial moment in the development of all metazoan embryos. It is the point in early embryogenesis when the zygote begins to activate gene expression and protein synthesis for itself. Up to this point, embryogenesis runs on RNA and proteins deposited into the egg from the mother. At the MZT there are major changes in RNA stability, which are associated with dramatic changes in protein levels, at least for the handful of proteins characterised in detail to date. This project will quantify protein levels and changes in protein stability in a systematic unbiased manner at multiple time points across the MZT, two properties that have not been characterised to date. With the development of new mass spec based methods in the Savitski lab, we now have the ability to directly measure changes in protein stability across these developmental transitions for the first time.
The successful post-doc applicant with be a joint member of both groups and should have excellent biochemical skills, and the ability to work with large-scale data. Mass spec experience is desirable, but not essential. The candidate will gain expertise in a range of cutting edge approaches that will be applied to a long-standing, important question in embryonic development.
