JOB TITLE: PacBio Technician





TRAVEL:  As required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management and administrative program support to various Centers, Institutes and Offices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under several contracts.  The successful candidate will be assigned to the Pneumonia Response and Surveillance Laboratory, Respiratory Diseases Branch (RDB), Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, and will provide support for the generation of DNA sequencing data and analysis of data generated by Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) methods, including but not limited to, data generated by the Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) sequencing platform.   




  • Prepare specimens for sequencing on the PacBio DNA sequencing platform
  • Perform sequencing using the PacBio platform
  • Create data systems to allow analyses of sequencing data generated
  • Perform both basic and descriptive analyses of sequencing data
  • Perform complex data modeling
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and protocols for the PacBio sequencing platform
  • Develop and maintain a schedule of specimens to be run on the PacBio sequencing platform that accommodates all laboratories within DBD
  • Ensure that all procedures and documentation meet Quality Management Standards
  • Provide results to other scientists within the DBD
  • Prepare scientific reports and manuscripts for meetings and publications



Education and Experience:

  • Degree  in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent
  • Extensive experience operating next generation sequencing platforms such as Illumina, 454, or Ion Torrent
  • Extensive experience conducting nucleic acid extractions, and performing quality control of nucleic acids
  • Extensive experience preparing nucleic acids for analysis using next generation sequencing platforms
  • Extensive experience in molecular biology
  • Strong interpersonal skills required for team work and extensive interaction with people across CDC and with external partners
  • Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts


  • Demonstrated experience working with the PacBio DNA sequencing platform
  • Demonstrated experience working with bioinformatics software tools including but not limited to those used for DNA quality control, assembly, alignment, and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data generated by the PacBio DNA sequencing platform as well as second generation platforms such as Illumina, 454, or Ion Torrent
  • Demonstrated experience working in a capacity to ensure that Quality Management Standards are met
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and communicating results to multiple research groups
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, while maintaining the ability to respond to RDB requests 
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new ideas for project research
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint


Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
