Job Description

The Organic Analytical Scientist will be responsible for designing and carrying out characterization of all the chemical components used in Cepheid in-vitro diagnostic products with various analytical tools. Characterization may involve the operation of a variety of analytical equipment, including but not limited to HPLC, mass spectrophotometer, GC/MS, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, NMR, and FT-IR. Plan, implement, and document test method development as needed. Other general laboratory procedures also apply, including preparation of formulations and in-process analytical techniques

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot any non-conforming issue in a timely manner
  • Design material characterization methods for small molecules and polymers
  • Interact with product transfer, product development and production group to resolve production failure issue in a timely fashion
  • Communicate with internal cross functional teams to maximize productivity
  • Give presentations at group meetings and document experiment data
  • Keep track on received orders, processing and historical data


  • Ph.D in organic synthesis with strong analytical chemistry background and 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience; Master's degree in Chemistry and/or other related discipline and 5 years of experience; Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and/or other related discipline and 7 years of laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level.
  • Thorough understanding of organic chemistry synthesis
  • Practical knowledge of polymer and carbohydrates chemistry and analysis
  • Able to design and perform basic synthetic routes of target materials, isolation and purification process such as extractions and prep chromatography
  • Biotechnology industry experience
  • Hands on experience with analytical instrumentation: HPLC, GC/MS, NMR, Mass spec, FTIR, and UV-VIS
  • Analytical Methods Development and Validation
  • Able to identify, develop and apply new technologies and ways of working within oligonucleotides, small molecule chemistry as well as peptides/proteins
  • Working experience in a cGMP regulated environment
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Computer and database management skills required
  • Familiarity with on-line databases of analytical data
