About Our Organization

Based in St. Louis, SSM Health Care was founded in 1872 by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary. It cares for people in a variety of settings including 18 hospitals, physician offices, a pharmacy benefit company, an insurance company, nursing homes, home care, hospice, telehealth and a technology company. With more than 7,000 physicians and 25,800 employees, SSM is one of the largest employers in every community it serves. In every region, SSM facilities forge creative relationships in the community to foster healthier people and healthier neighborhoods. Through these relationships and at its various sites, SSM serves more than 1.5 million people annually.
Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God.

What We Mean By Exceptional

Inspired by our founding religious sisters, we value the sacredness and dignity of each person. Therefore, we find these five values consistent with our heritage and ministry:

We reach out with openness, kindness and concern.

We honor the wonder of the human spirit.

We expect the best of ourselves and one another.

We use our resources responsibly.

We cultivate relationships that inspire us to serve.
