Job Description



The primary responsibilities of the Market Development Application Scientist will be to produce high value product-related collateral with the objective of providing the commercial team with impactful selling tools and cultivating strategic customer relationships.  The Market Development Application Scientist role requires exceptional technical expertise in qPCR, dPCR and NextGen Sequencing, associated workflows, and market knowledge. The role will require a strong command of RainDance’s technology and breadth of applications enabled by the platform. S/He will be expected to actively engage Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), build collaborative relationships, support technical studies, and produce deliverables such as publications, posters, application notes, speaking engagements, webinars, and testimonials. Success in this role will involve actively building a world class scientific network.


The Market Development Application Scientist is expected to be self-sufficient in the science and capable of transferring knowledge to all levels of customer skill sets. Internal partnerships will be fostered with sales, FAS, service and R&D for the development and support of customer engagements. This position requires travel to customer sites.


The RainDance team is looking for an individual with the proven ability to engage customers at the highest levels of science to represent the technical capabilities of the RainDance core technology and applications. The focus of these engagements is to foster collaborative relationships, to design impactful experiments, and demonstrate meaningful technology capabilities and performance advantages over competitive technologies and workflows. 


This position requires extensive customer interaction and excellent customer support; therefore strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are required.


The critical measure of success will be generating tangible proof of RainDance capabilities that clearly demonstrates the advantages and strengths of the technology and differentiating applications.  This will require skills to translate the technical results of customer engagements into differentiating sales messaging, marketing, and training materials.





  • Market Development Application Scientist’s responsibilities include but not limited to:

    • Trusted advisor to RainDance High Value Customer sites; provide training, troubleshooting, optimization, consulting, and product integration.

    • Educate customers on the capabilities of the RainDance technology and applications as well as emerging technology and scientific foundation of technologies.

    • Provide technical support to ensure success with experimental design, technology performance and successful demonstration of applications with the RainDance platform.

    • Proactively gather, assimilate, synthesize and consult on detailed publications, applications, and competitor’s capabilities in order to leverage for customer and RainDance success.

    • Serve as an internal advocate within RainDance for the “Voice of Customer”

    • Maintain the highest level of integrity with all customer interactions

    • Ability to synthesize “Voice of the Customer” related to existing and potential applications, novel concepts, competitive experiences and future needs.

    • Develop and deliver technical presentations, scientific discussions, and product demonstrations tailored to audiences, markets, applications and business opportunities.

    • Manage the tracking, development and reporting of progress to senior management regarding the strategic value and deliverables generated through key customer relationships.

  • Travel will be a significant part of this job.

7+ years’ experience in R&D, Technical Applications, Business Development role, or equivalent experience, with strong scientific background. PhD preferred.

  • Strong customer relationship skills are a must

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Team-oriented contributor: experience working with internal senior leadership, commercial and support teams

  • Strong experience working in a laboratory environment particularly dPCR, qPCR and NGS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Fluent in written and verbal English.

  • Demonstrated understanding of commonly-used data analysis software applications preferred

  • Ability to identify and solve problems effectively

  • Able to anticipate and diffuse critical/potentially challenging customer situations

  • Strong understanding of multi-cultural communication styles

  • Demonstrated excellence in the development and delivery of technical presentations, scientific discussions and product demonstrations

  • Experience in a rapidly growing organization a plus

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment including flexibility around schedule and function

  • Self-directed with strong initiative

  • Demonstrated success in identifying and improving key company processes

  • MS degree/ PhD in life sciences or equivalent

  • Must be available up to 50% travel that may include over-night stays


  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
