Job Description

The Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a LINUX SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR. The purpose of the LINUX Systems Administrator is to provide computer systems engineering, administration, and support services as a member of Genome Sciences IT Services (GS-ITS). This person would be part of the Research Computing Team, a group of three other LINUX system administrators and one manager. This position reports to the Manager of Departmental Computing. GS-ITS supports multiple high performance LINUX clusters (8000+ CPU cores in aggregate), 8PB+ of NAS/SAN storage from a variety of vendors, numerous large MySQL and Postgres databases, custom LINUX application servers, heterogeneous desktops (Windows, Mac OSX, LINUX), high-performance networking equipment including 10GbE, 100GbE, and Infiniband, as well as large scale backup/archive services. GS-ITS provides/supports connectivity to 1800+ local devices and world-wide access to research data and tools. 

The LINUX System Administrator will support computing infrastructure for all users within Genome Sciences as well as collaborators world-wide. The majority of work will be focused on supporting a large-scale, complex, and heterogeneous scientific computing environment. This work must address the rapidly evolving technical requirements associated with cutting edge genetic research while complying with federal HIPAA requirements that apply to departments within the School of Medicine. Applicants should demonstrate expert level troubleshooting skills. The LINUX Systems Administrator must be able to assess complex software/hardware problems, brainstorm solutions, test and refine those solutions, and finally report those results and/or propose further action to other members of the Department in a concise and compelling manner. 

Responsibilities include the following: 

  • 50% Independently engineer solutions to existing complex computing operations issues.  By applying a high level of proficiency in the theoretical operations of computers and networks and a specialized knowledge of the practical application of the underlying theories, this person will work independently to solve problems, develop systems and document procedures.  The solutions will need to directly address the functional requirements as determined by direct work with faculty and the other members of the GS-ITS team. 
  • 30% Work independently and as part of a team to design, prototype, and implement new systems and procedures, including frequent systems programming using programming languages such as Perl, Python, or BASH. 
  • 10% Create in-depth technical documentation for complex systems.  The documentation will need to be constructed and maintained in a manner that will allow other system administrators to quickly understand the critical components of complex systems design and maintenance.  Documentation will need to adhere to documentation standards. 
  • 10% Work directly with faculty to determine functional requirements for labs.  The person will then use systems analysis techniques and procedures to design, specify, and implement systems to meet those needs. 

    This position requires a flexible schedule and ability to respond to urgent off-hours issues.
Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or related field 
  • Minimum of two years experience providing network and computing support in a professional setting, including the support of LINUX based systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience with LINUX, Mac OS X, and Windows based systems. 
  • Demonstrated professional competence in systems administration or systems engineering. 
  • Demonstrated ability to see complex IT projects through to successful completion.

DESIRED:

  • Windows Active Directory administration experience 
  • Experience supporting large scale scientific computing operations. 
  • Experience supporting multiple investigators in a University or non-profit research environment. 
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and NIH data security policies. 
  • Large scale NAS/SAN storage experience. 
  • RHCE certification.
