Job Description

The Laboratory Manager will play a key role in ensuring the laboratory’s ability to meet our promised results to clients. They will establish guidelines to prioritize work production, evaluate effectiveness, oversee day-to-day operations and consistently find ways to improve service levels. They must ensure positive client relations by delivering all results within the specified turnaround times, assuring productivity levels in the labs are continuously achieved or exceeded.

The role of Lab Manager is a dynamic position that requires an energetic contender who not only has rich experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory setting, but whose talents lie in operations, organization, process development and management as well as leadership and talent development.

 They will liaise with Quality Assurance to ensure laboratories are always ready to pass any and all inspections and are meeting all regulatory requirements.  They will ensure their staff is fully trained on any changes in regulations or workflows in accordance with the QA Director as needed.


  1. They will oversee the hiring of competent and qualified employees, who meet the strict standards of the work ethic here in the Genetic Testing Laboratory with enthusiasm and the obligatory technical know-how. They guarantee regular check-ins with staff and performance levels and directly supervise, train and mentor lab supervisors and team leaders, taking direct responsibility for their competency, continuing education and morale.


  2. They are responsible for promoting an encouraging and motivational work environment that is team-oriented, collaborative, resourceful, transparent and open to working with, assisting, and sharing best practices with other departments to ensure a culture of cross-cooperation and problem-solving.


  3.  Monitor turnaround times and ensure all samples are run in a timely manner, guaranteeing we meet acceptable repeat and failure rates.


  4. Attend all staff and management meetings and ensure all information received reaches their direct reports in a timely and comprehensive manner.


  5. Determine the most efficient workflows and capacities.


  6. Troubleshoot, solve and document issues as they arise, using staff in the most effective ways to recover service.


  7. Prioritize the activity of subordinates. Anticipate, authenticate and resolve any problems or concerns within their staff, set schedules and attainable deadlines, assuring they are met at all times. If a deadline may not be met they must step in in time to prevent a breakdown in client service and inform all necessary parties.


  8. Assist management and senior leadership in the development of short and long-term plans for the continued growth and success of the laboratory.


  9. Uphold an effective working relationship with the clinical directors, Quality Assurance, IT and supervisors, seeking areas for collaboration and keeping each other informed of any matters that could affect one another’s teams or goals.

  1. Education: BA / BS degree required; advanced degree preferred but can be substituted with extensive experience in a similar role.

  2. Minimum 5-10 years of professional experience in a Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory setting with management experience required. 3-5 years of prior supervisory experience in a laboratory with high volumes of output required. Experience in a genetic testing lab is a plus.

  3. Direct experience with customer service, technical service, or implementation and programming required.

  4. Proven track record of developing and executing process improvements that led to a measurable impact within an organization. Demonstrated ability to anticipate and plan for any potential delays in turnaround time and plan accordingly to meet client needs.
