Position Summary

Precision NanoSystems has an opening for a Head of Application Development to lead the Applications Products Group to drive the overall success of our transfection kit franchise, and to provide leadership support for additional programs as required. The position reports to our COO and is based at PNI’s headquarters in Vancouver, BC. The individual will work collaboratively with the engineering and product development teams, as well as external collaborators, to develop new transfection kits for the delivery of nucleic acids to high-value primary- and iPS- cells in vitro, and to target cells in vivo.  This work will expand PNI’s current transfection product line, the leading solution for delivery of RNA & DNA in primary neurons in vitro & in vivo (https://www.precisionnanosystems.com/transfectionreagents/)

This is an exciting and interdisciplinary role for a highly qualified and motivated individual. The successful candidate will be a confident leader, with attention to detail and a prior track record of establishing R&D programs that have been translated into innovative products.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Lead and manage product development in the R&D lab in the development of transfection kits for the delivery of nucleic acids, including pDNA, mRNA, siRNA and genome editing to primary and iPS cells in vitro and to target cells in vivo
  • Lead research and development plans, product design criteria, including the identification of gaps in technology and opportunities for new projects/products; prepare various types of documentation; provide ongoing support after product launch
  • Identify and assess new technologies and business opportunities, including evaluation of potential collaboration projects
  • Collaborate with internal groups to assess competition and generally assist in business development as it pertains to the transfection kit franchise
  • Identify and lead collaborations with external partners to test and validate new product concepts
  • Lead, manage and coach R&D scientific staff
  • Work with internal teams to ensure the smooth transition of R&D concepts to market ready products including providing support to Product Development, Manufacturing, Operations, Marketing, Sales, Business Development and Finance teams
  • Maintain current and extensive understanding of experimental and clinical developments in the areas of in vitro / in vivo nucleic acid delivery to cells identified as of high strategic value.  Relate to product development, draft business plans and market analyses
  • Generate intellectual property documents, draft complete patent applications, evaluate prior art, and respond to patent office actions, as required
  • Collaborate with relevant teams to ensure safety/health and regulatory compliance of the wetware R&D facility
  • Manage project research budget, initiate cost reduction projects
  • Support for all technical documentation related to product development and launch
  • Act as scientific ambassador for the company, make external presentations, publish abstracts and articles, establish collaborations
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned
  • Travel: Up to 20% of time
Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in relevant scientific discipline, with approximately 7 years of experience in R&D with experience related to development of innovative products
  • Track record of publishing in a relevant field. Background in immunology, immuno-oncology, gene editing is desirable
  • Proven experience managing and leading multi-disciplinary laboratory teams
  • Successful track record in writing patents. Grant writing experience is an asset.
  • Prior experience in supporting Product Development, Sales and Marketing in the successful launch of products into the life sciences tools market
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Skilled presenter who is able to deliver technical data summaries as well as high level explanations designed to support strategic decisions to a senior audience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as exemplified by the successful management of direct reports and large cross-functional teams
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to be flexible and adjust to rapidly changing priorities, and to deliver results to meet project timelines on budget
