Job Description

The Institute of Translational Genomics of is seeking a Director for a new Next-Generation Sequencing Center to service the Keck School of Medicine, the University of Southern California (USC), and its affiliates. The successful candidate will develop and maintain a state-of-the art collaborative sequencing facility built around collaboration and best-in-class technical expertise all in support of translational research.

The Director will be responsible for operational oversight of a range of genomic assays and be involved in developing new genomics protocols and to support grant applications and publications.  They will be responsible for leading collaborative interactions with researchers and vendors to provide consistent high quality, timely, and cost effective genomic sequencing for the study human disease.   They will be responsible for laboratory staff oversight and for of all aspects of the laboratory operation to assure the highest quality of service. They will be responsible for the management of operational and capital resources, and maintaining operations with budget targets. They are expected to work closely with bioinformatics expertise and will need experience working in the development of automated analysis, sample tracking, and delivery of results. In addition, candidates should have:

  • Experience working in developing and maintaining SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
  • Extensive understanding of processes involving genomic assays, data management and high-throughput NGS data analysis
  • Experience in leading, and implementing initiatives within a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working in development of laboratory informatics systems (LIS), command-line scripting and use of statistical languages such as R, construction SQL-queries, and experience with relational databases including table construction, data analytics, and business analytic tools.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for interactions with research and development staff, as well as external with collaborators and clients
  • Ability and desire to do bench work and operate laboratory instrumentation.

The Core Director will be eligible for a faculty level appointment in the Department of Translational Genomics, at a level commensurate with experience. The Director will be expected to work closely in collaboration with other investigators supporting development of collaborative grant opportunities and publications translational research. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree and significant postdoctoral research experience.
