Job Description

Position Summary

We are looking for a high calibre R&D Formulation Scientist with a passion for lab work and a multidisciplinary background in nanoparticle development and drug delivery systems. The Scientist will develop new and novel techniques and reagents for producing lipid and polymer-based nanoparticles on the NanoAssemblr™ platform for a wide range of applications in nanomedicine therapeutics. The Scientist will also contribute to a wide-range of technology development projects related to PNI’s NanoAssemblr™ platform. They will serve as an in-house expert in nanoparticle formulation development. The Scientist is expected to manage multiple projects and aid in the supervision of junior laboratory staff. This role contributes to the general functioning of the R&D department and laboratory, and the continued quality standards of laboratory work set by PNI.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Lead multiple nanoparticle application development and technology development projects including research plan, deliverables and budget
  • Responsible for designing and executing experiments with minimal input from supervisor, including establishing novel technologies in-house
  • Generate intellectual property documents, draft patent applications, evaluate prior art, and respond to patent office actions, as required
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure successful project completion including providing support to Product Development, Manufacturing, and Operations
  • Support all technical documentation related to projects and product development
  • Provides technical support and training to PNI staff and customers (product use, protocols) 

  • Maintain established laboratory policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and compliance standards 

  • Act as scientific ambassador for the company, make external presentations, publish abstracts and articles and identify collaborations
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned


Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field
  • Previous product development experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry would be a major asset
  • Extensive hands-on experience across nanoparticle/nanomedicine development, drug delivery systems, and lipid and polymer formulation sciences
  • Significant hands-on experience with a broad range of analytical methods and characterization techniques including microscopy, HPLC, UV-VIS, SEM, TEM, DLS and zeta-potential
  • A strong understanding of biological systems would be an asset
  • Documented ability to independently design, conduct, analyze and troubleshoot experiments 

  • Experience with statistical analyses of experimental data is an asset 

  • Project management skills will be considered as an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) both in one-on-one and in a group
setting with the ability to deliver high level and technical summaries of scientific data
  • The individual must be a team player who thrives in a dynamic environment with multiple tasks and aggressive deadlines
  • Proven ability to apply critical and analytical thinking
  • Must be a resourceful, proactive, detail oriented individual who is able to work with
minimum supervision
