Job Description

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, this role requires a working knowledge and demonstrated experience in molecular techniques with a special emphasis on Next Generation Sequencing and real-time PCR. Experience of single cell analysis would be an advantage. The role includes conducting product demonstrations, customer trainings and providing support to help our customers achieve optimal results. You will have the ability to independently design and execute laboratory experiments and analyze and interpret results to determine next steps. You will guide customers in experimental design and work closely with the commercial team in pre-sales support activities. You will need to manage multiple priorities effectively to achieve your goals. The territory will primarily be the Western Part of the United States and will require about 50% travel.  Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Design and execution of experimental strategies, and the interpretation of results.
  • Hands on demonstration of protocols and workflows.
  • Troubleshooting customer results.
  • Instrumentation and reagent workflow demonstrations in house and at customer sites.
  • Customer training – to include seminars, workshops, instrumentation and reagent training.
  • Designing, planning, organizing and performing operator trainings for new and existing customers.
  • Mentoring and training other members of the applications team.
  • Provision of second level technical support to in-house and field support personnel.
  • Performing instrument validation. Reviewing operational quality of equipment, and instruction of customers in operation and maintenance of systems.
  • Provision of scientific support in Molecular Biology and Genomics in regard to operational questions from customers as well as internal peers with focus on single cell analysis/ customized library prep assay development / set up.
  • Identification of complaints, reporting according to the most recent guidelines, supporting the complaint handling process.
  • Keeping knowledge up to date with respect to new products and procedures to give an optimal support for training and demonstrations.
  • Liaising closely with the sales team to provide support for current and potential customers.
  • Provision of support at trade shows, European and locally organized, to demonstrate the platforms and technologies and to support the local teams.
  • Experience with working in an international environment
  • Ability and willingness to maintain a travel schedule of up to 50% travel as required.






  • PhD or equivalent with experience in Molecular Biology or Genomics.
  • Strong scientific knowledge and practical lab experience in genomic applications such as next generation sequencing, sample prep/ library prep for genomic analysis, digital PCR and / qPCR assays and panels or
  • Professional experience as a research scientist with experience in Molecular Technologies with an emphasis on qPCR, and Next Generation Sequencing.
  • Experience in customer interaction and support.
  • Being able to use your scientific knowledge and deploy it in an application environment.
  • Strong analytical/diagnostic skills.

About Our Organization

The Genomic Sciences focus area at BD Technologies is engaged in activities related to Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Single Cell Genomics (SCG). Technical competencies of the group span the entire NGS workflow including:

  • the collection and preparation of biological samples
  • the preparation of libraries for sequencing
  • NGS
  • bioinformatics 
  • statistical analysis of complex NGS datasets


Currently, the team is part of the global product development effort for the recently acquired BD GenCell automated NGS library preparation system.
