Job Description

Reporting to the Portfolio Manager for Next Generation Sequencing, this West Coast US-based position will be an integral part of the dynamic and growing NEBNext team.  The Field Applications Scientist will work closely with customers, the Marketing group, NEBNext Development Scientists, as well as US-based Field (sales) Account Managers while serving as a technical field contact for customers, including providing pre-sales technical interactions, customer trainings and troubleshooting support, in conjunction with the in-house NEBNext team.  The ideal candidate will be located in California.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific, technical and applications support of NEBNext products (complementing the in-house NEBNext team), through on-site customer visits, presentations, workshops and scientific seminars in the field as needed, as well as via phone and email.

  • Work with the US Field Account Managers to identify new sales and collaboration opportunities with existing and new customers.

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of individual customers’ needs through strong working relationships.

  • Support the automation of NEBNext product workflows, working with both customers and automation partners.

  • Provide customer feedback to Marketing and product development scientists.

  • Keep updated on all aspects of NEBNext products and NGS more broadly, including participation in relevant scientific conferences.

  • Be committed to providing exceptional customer service.


Required Qualifications:


  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in a core life science field.  

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in life sciences, with at least 1 year of experience in a sequencing laboratory using Illumina sequencing technology.

  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency with the entire sequencing workflow, from sample preparation to bioinformatic analysis.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills – both written and verbal.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Must possess strong relationship-building skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to travel domestically >50% of time.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Broad knowledge of the sequencing market, networks of customers and other third parties in the NGS marketplace.

  • An understanding of the selling process in the NGS market.

  • Be self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and in a team.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
